ABSTRACT

Human history entered a new era in 1776 when James Watt invented the steam engine. The First Industrial Revolution significantly improved the productivity of the human society and changed the ways of production. The story of Joint Commission International (JCI) starts with Dr. Ernest Codman’s mission to establish “a system that enable a hospital to track every patient it treated long enough to determine whether or not the treatment was effective. Finally, in 1998, JCI was established under Quality Healthcare Resources as the international arm of accreditation and consultation. The JCI standards were initially modified based on the original Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations standards. JCI not only established its own accreditation committee but also standard development subcommittee with representation from all over the world. The first JCI Accreditation Standards for Hospitals was published and used in official international survey activities in 2000.
