ABSTRACT

Huashan Hospital Affiliated to Fudan University was established in 1907. It is under direct governance of the National Health Commission and Fudan University. The hospital leadership gradually learned how to utilize Joint Commission International (JCI) survey as a tool to promote quality and safety in the hospital. Through JCI accreditation, Huashan Hospital successfully provided world-class medical service to the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. Dr. Ding Qiang, Chief Executive Officer of Huashan, commented on the exit meeting, Huashan is the first general public hospital in China’s mainland to take the JCI challenge and succeeded. In Huashan, quality improvement projects were implemented for shift handover and inter-unit patient transfer, including formulating new policies, designing new work flows, adopting standard tools and templates, and monitoring the implementation. JCI requires hospitals properly dispose the medical waste to reduce infection risks.
