ABSTRACT

The consolidation of the Hungarian Chinese community in 1991-92 was marked by the appearance of voluntary associations. Paul Kwok established good relations with the People's Republic of China (PRC) embassy and had HCA registered with the authorities in Peking. The PRC Gongshanglian has also been active in contacts with migrant traders within mainland China. The PRC embassy reacted to the mushrooming of organisations with calls for unity. The success of the Chinese community in Hungary already seems to be a much-discussed subject among Chinese in Western Europe. In Western European Chinese communities, traditional and commercial associations have never exercised the kind of control or power as their counterparts in Southeast Asia or North America. Leaders of the European Federation of Chinese Organisations actively participate in the various world conferences organised on a native-place or general basis, where they meet organisation leaders from other continents as well as Chinese officials.
