ABSTRACT

We begin with ethical basics associated with the principle of responsibility, including knowing the difference between “right and wrong” and “good and bad.” You will explore the concept of “justification” as an excuse for immoral behavior and acquaint yourself with tenets of accountability, credibility and trust. You will be able to distinguish between real and fake news, genuine and disingenuous corrections and apologies, and role models/mentors and icons/idols. Along the way you will encounter historical and case studies associated with responsibility, including theories about the press. Finally, you will encounter more philosophy about truth, from moral relativity to moral absolutes, and test your understanding about them in personal and communal journal exercises at the end of the chapter.
