ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book focuses on some linkages – in a methodical way – and on how to address them, aiming at contributing to the current discussion within the international community about proper solutions to the plight of the urban children in developing countries. It provides evidence about the magnitude of the main problems faced by these children, with particular attention to housing-related issues. The book also provides a systematic set of information and recommendations about – and to support – action in developing countries. It also presents guidelines to evaluate the implementation of the actions; which is important to feed future initiatives and re-start the process. The book suggests that a simple set of general indicators for evaluation which have had international approval should be used in conjunction with locally-constructed indicators.
