ABSTRACT

This chapter presents qualitative and quantitative information on the situation of children in relation to housing conditions, social conditions in human settlements, and displacement from home. It discusses the plight of those who do not have access to housing. The chapter focuses on those who live in critical housing conditions and examines the situation according to the two basic aspects of housing: shelter and services. A high number of children and young adolescents live in precarious shelter units and neighbourhoods, with a high risk of accidents and diseases and with little or no provision of the public spaces and facilities they need for play, sport and social life. The household indicators include number of persons per household, number of children under five or working-age adults or elderly people or pregnant women per household, number of rooms per household. Many children grow up at risk or in deprivation because they face tangible dangers due to different forms of abuse.
