ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book introduces children to a way of working that may impact on different areas of their lives. It offers advice on how to use role play, maths trails, home/school links, easy-to-create resources, games and the outdoor environment to support mathematical learning. The book provides ideas and suggestions of how to develop children’s understanding of mathematical concepts through both familiar and unfamiliar stories, practical everyday materials and strategies of total engagement. It shows how children can acquire language through extended listening experiences and negotiation of meaning through a relevant, meaningful context, which is necessary for effective language acquisition. The book looks at mathematics learning that happens in a way that is not abstract or disconnected from children’s experiences. It also provides challenges for all pupils, although outcomes may differ from child to child.
