ABSTRACT

This chapter explores stories that include a wealth of mathematical ideas such as calculating, simple addition and subtraction problems, comparing, counting, understanding and using numbers, discussing and problem-solving, matching, measures including length, weight and time and investigating shape and pattern. Dragons are one of the world’s most popular mythological creatures. They are represented in cultures all over the world. Dinosaurs have held children’s imagination for many years. Many people still believe that they are a close cousin of the dragon or are, in fact, dragons. The story is about a little dragon that does not enjoy fighting and would rather make daisy chains than eat princesses. A dragon cave made from boxes, screens, long pieces of material and smaller boxes to make into rocks gives children the opportunities to change the cave every day, keeping it as a semi-permanent fixture.
