Chapter 2: Approaches to English for Specific Purposes. Here we outline a broad range of approaches to teaching and learning English in the disciplines and key concepts that are related to them. The chapter includes a historical review of the main approaches including the development of ESP coursebooks. Successive generations of ESP coursebooks are identified and analyzed. The chapter identifies a number of current issues in ESP course design, suggesting a range of approaches that are likely to be important in the future. These are learner autonomy, genre, multimodality and digital literacies, plurilingualism and project-based learning and collaboration.
