ABSTRACT

Introduction In Western European societies, debates about sustainability are usually inextricably linked to questions of land management and use. It is clear that most, if not all policy prescriptions related to the achievement of some vision of a sustainable society are likely to have, often quite major, land use implications whether this concerns the protection of valued rural areas, waste reclamation or energy policy, or the move to a coordinated and more environmentally sound approach to transport. Land use policy is therefore likely to play a major part in any wider, integrated environmental policy which has sustainability as its ultimate aim.
