ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the principal findings of the case studies. It describes to get an insight into the organising capacity of eight Eurocities and their regions. Leadership, vision and strategy, strategic networks, spatial-economic problems, political support, societal support can all be regarded as critical factors of failure and success in terms of organising capacity. The successful revitalisation projects involved in the inquiry appear to have been orchestrated by a municipality, agency, person, group of persons, business company or government agency. So, leadership can also be based on the strength of an organisation. Given the right actors, strategic networks are a good breeding ground of new ideas and initiatives, and provide the flexibility required to start up innovative projects. The tendency to drive necessary but unattractive distribution and transport activities out of the region -the reverse side of the economic success- may jeopardise the competitive position of the region in the long term.
