ABSTRACT

The Exposition Universelle of 1900 was the spectacle of the decade, ending the century on a triumphant note of display, drama and consumerism.686 Among the most alluring of the abundant international exhibits and pavilions enticing the viewer to experience the thrills of far-off lands and exotic entertainment were two medieval French villages replete with shops, taverns, entertainment and costumed inhabitants.687 Paris en 1400: Reconstitution de la Cour des Miracles consisted of a crenelated castle opened along l'Avenue de Suffren, while Le Vieux Paris recreated a Paris composed largely of monuments that no longer existed.
