ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book examines what a more synergistic approach to systems change might look like. It demonstrates the value of this systems lens for orienting various stakeholders around the same problem, while better embracing the complexity, scale, and ambiguity inherent in the problems we face. The book considers the need for explicit, imaginative thinking in the face of scale and complexity–thinking that neither over-determines a plan nor simply assumes progress will emerge on its own. It outlines the models of leadership required to align actors and provides an agenda for collective action partnerships moving forward. The book argues that more adaptive approach, incorporating ongoing feedback from the people whom interventions or programs are meant to benefit. It discusses how the home for diverse and anti-disciplinary thinking allows us to better configure novel solutions to real-world problems.
