ABSTRACT

This chapter describes some of the difficulties and obstacles of creative work that are sometimes obscure and difficult to observe. A factor to consider when facing the requirements of creative work is that of the links or connections between parts of the self, since the nature and number of links may contribute to the richness of the work. The question to the creativity of the analyst is in his or her failed capacity to recognise the emotional cues of the patient. The importance of Wilfred Bion's theory of thinking lies in how he managed to connect emotions and cognition. He was as concerned with exploring how emotions become meaningful as he was with a model of how the capacity to think develops. Bion argues that, in order to comprehend an emotional element, it is necessary to "see" the conscious and the unconscious part in a "binocular way".
