ABSTRACT

The financial fallout from the Great Recession pushed institutions to examine their effectiveness. The book discusses case study of the college that describes the challenges of creating a community college designed in direct opposition to the traditional framework. The national movement focused on community college graduation rates highlighted specific reforms that should be adopted by all two-year colleges. The Accelerated Study in Associate Program at the City University of New York has emerged as a national example of the ways in which mandatory full-time enrollment, coupled with other support services dramatically increases both retention and completion rates. In tandem with mandatory full-time enrollment, many community colleges capitalized on research that showed the positive impact of integrated advising. Dr. Thomas Bailey et al. write that “at community colleges, the academic advisor is the most important resource to help new students clarify their goals”.
