ABSTRACT

Systematic instruction for the beginning student, along with graded assignments, begins with Chapter 2. The first part deals with the individual phrase, including what is called the musical sentence, a term coined by Arnold Schoenberg. The second part presents seven examples of parallel phrases (antecedent-consequent pairs). Here the student is introduced to the important concepts of interruption and closure. This is also the beginning of an ongoing discussion of graphic notation to represent musical interpretation of structure from a Schenkerian perspective.
