ABSTRACT

A rock musician will play three chords in front of 30,000 people and a jazz musician will play 30,000 chords in front of three people. Harmony plays an essential role in electronic dance music. While some genres may not exhibit harmony in the traditional sense, they will nonetheless employ chords and progressions. A chord consists of two or more notes played simultaneously. Traditionally, however, chords will consist of three or more notes. Moving from a major to a minor chord or employing a majority of major or minor chords in a progression will help determine the mood of the music. Alongside major and minor, chords may contain a perfect fifth. Perfect fifths have an important relationship with the ‘tonic’ note of a scale. Chords are always named after the root note and followed with some basic terminology of what they are.
