ABSTRACT

A major priority which was identified early on in the project was the need to improve existing pupil assessment procedures and school record systems. The two main ones were the development and implementation of a new record system, and the adoption of the Record of Personal Experience (RPE) scheme of pupil self assessment. This chapter evaluates account of each. The 'personal interest' sheet was designed to be completed by pupils giving them opportunities for recording their interests and activities both in school and outside. The broader rationale for RPE seemed generally absent from these pupils' accounts, so that where pupils were reluctant to take their work to job interviews this rendered RPE of little value in the eyes of the majority. Giving pupils the opportunity of contributing to their own record, as RPE in a sense allows, is one way of ensuring that the definition of the 'ruled' by the 'rulers' is rendered a little less than complete.
