ABSTRACT

This chapter explores a number of issues associated with ensuring that the group of students are not denied opportunities to participate. For students with disabilities, the specialist support staff are often members of networks of practitioners both at national and international levels and so they can give advice about aspects associated with support needs. Mobility International USA have worked with students with disabilities in different structures which go beyond study exchanges. As with all other universities, students studying foreign languages have to meet the requirement for residence abroad. The University of Central Lancashire has acquired a national reputation for its policies and provision for students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. Since 1993 the number of these student has grown considerably and in 1997, there were around 20 students whose first language was British Sign Language and needed the services of interpreters and notetakers.
