ABSTRACT

The perception of many people working in the field of disabilities is that there have been tremendous gains made by persons with disabilities with respect to accessing higher education in Canada. In the spring of 1995, a university graduate was hired to conduct a telephone survey with 47 Canadian universities. Currently there are around 2,300,000 persons with disabilities between the ages 15-64 with disabilities in Canada. Extrapolating from Jennifer Hill's studies of 27 universities in Canada we could estimate that there were about 3,869 persons with disabilities at Canadian universities in 1992. Essentially one must push for the commitment of government and universities to effect structural changes that will see participation levels of persons with disabilities increase in universities. Universities in conjunction with government must collaborate in establishing standardisation for the categorisations and criteria for inclusion in these categories. This chapter focuses on the qualitative data obtained from the telephone contact.
