ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the content available in Section 2 of the book. Workforce sustainability as a critical component of quality in early childhood settings is a theme woven implicitly into each chapter of the section. Workforce sustainability is threatened by the challenges of educator skill levels, staff turnover, lack of competitive wages and unreasonable workloads and professional support (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, or OECD). In contemplating each chapter in the section, we can consider how attention to educator preparation, well-being and professional development could address these workforce challenges and lead to a more sustainable early childhood workforce. We may also contemplate the role policy-advocacy plays in educator preparation and longevity.
