ABSTRACT

This chapter considers that ‘other’ sheet of paper, an interactive screen, as a drawing surface, and possibilities of meaning-making with and for young children. Digital drawing is another vehicle for children to become familiar with and utilise techniques to tell us what meaning(s) they are making of the world. Drawing on children’s experiences at Mia Mia (Sydney, Australia), an exploration of the techniques and affordances of this media will be examined, noting the differences between paper and screen and respecting the child’s agency. This chapter explores experiences with children under five years of age, drawing with the ‘other’, an engagement with live projected drawings where the children create a dialogue with the live projected image, the drawing and the mark-maker. These games, where a child ‘takes a line for a walk’ (Ingold, 2007), generate a discursive discourse linking elements to make a drawn landscape co-constructed by action, words, ideas and serendipity.
