ABSTRACT

Within primary science teaching, the area most neglected by schools and individual teachers is the monitoring, recording and evaluating of children's work. The easiest way of monitoring what children are doing is by observation. Factors such as motivation, the behaviour of other children in the group and physical fitness, could radically alter our perception of each child on a particular day. The process of evaluation can only be attempted when a basis of aims and objectives has been established either by the school or the individual teacher. Many teachers lacking the confidence to include science in their classroom activities need some sort of guidance to give them a much greater sense of security and purpose. It is generally agreed that the aims of primary science can be divided into this three sections: the development of attitudes; skills; concepts and knowledge.
