ABSTRACT

A number of excellent accounts of the development of primary science in England have been written. This chapter provides a glimpse into how one school has developed and implemented a policy for primary science. It describes scientific investigations rather than just science, as for many people, including teachers, 'science' suggests a formal discipline suited to older pupils. The recognition by staff of the importance of scientific experience as an integral part of a balanced curriculum is one of the most important stages in the implementation of a programme. General practice requires a termly class topic in which areas of science to be studied are identified and from the stem group and individual investigations. Primary science makes a significant contribution to language development and helps provide the knowledge needed for a responsible attitude towards the environment.
