ABSTRACT

When the trials of learning through science pupil materials started in the autumn term of 1979 the schools used were those of the headteachers involved in the study groups. Diversity exists among those who believe science has a place in the primary school, those who think science should only appear within the area known as environmental studies and those who believe that science should have a place of its own, equal in emphasis with any subject in the curriculum. Scotland has been involved in the trials of every set of learning through science cards and more than 200 schools have been involved. With the existing enthusiasm among the representatives of the advisory services and colleges of education, and the goodwill of the teachers, the scientific education of young children is likely, in the future, to play an increasingly important part in their total primary school experience.
