ABSTRACT

To some it may seem surprising to question whether content matters, for if it is assumed that primary science is all about learning content then of course it matters what is learned. The most useful content is any that interests the child or arouses his curiosity – whether it is finding out if food dyes affect the taste of homemade sweets, or how quickly snails can travel across different surfaces. In order to enable children gradually to build up the basic scientific ideas identified by Science Curriculum Improvement Study, the programme consists of some units geared to each year of elementary school, each unit comprising workbooks for pupils, a teacher's guide and a kit of equipment. It is important that any set of guidelines should be produced by discussion between the teachers who are to use them and others with relevant expertise in the education of children.
