ABSTRACT

Curriculum development is concerned with the planning of learning opportunities which will best give pupils the chance to make progress towards stated objectives considered desirable. Assumptions underlying this approach are that the curriculum can be improved and that pupils' progress towards the objectives is the main criterion for determining the success of the curriculum. Curriculum development is concerned, as we have previously indicated, with improving the curriculum and pupils' progress towards objectives is the main criterion for judging its success. There is another aspect of sampling which can be considered for use in some circumstances. If the assessment is to be used only for curriculum improvement then the principle of sampling may be applied to pupils. Judgement is involved in evaluation and so the further steps of interpretation and the taking of appropriate action must follow. Teachers give considerable attention to the progress which their pupils are making.
