ABSTRACT

Principles of Good Practice in Continuing Education is enthusiastically endorsed by distinguished figures in the field of adult and continuing education. The endorsements of well-known figures in adult education and the commitment of respected practitioners gives legitimacy to the Principles document. Professor Mezirow’s commentary on the fallacy entailed in the reduction of good practice in continuing education to 18 general directives and 70 elements should not be overlooked by those of us who are serious about adult and continuing education as a distinctive vocation. According to Principles of Good Practice in Continuing Education, there is really nothing new about the kind of statements it contains but “what is new, and different, are the consolidation and refinement of principles and elements from a variety of sources into a single set of principles.” Adult educators have moved beyond the need for prodding by long lists of formal stipulations.
