ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of the key concepts discussed in the subsequent chapters of this book. The book provides a summary of the guidance which has appeared in the last two years, mainly emanating from the National Curriculum Council. It aims to facilitate the understanding of Education for Citizenship and its relationship with other curriculum areas. Written as it is by those with special knowledge of, and experience in, areas of the curriculum other than citizenship it presents a unique collection of writings. The book summarises some of the issues that arose at a conference in Northamptonshire in May 1991. The teachers, advisers and other educationalists present were interested in the management issues for schools trying to implement cross-curricular learning. The book focuses on the relationships seen to exist among the five themes, which certainly should not be seen as discrete from one another.
