ABSTRACT

Technology is an essential part of human culture because it is concerned with achievement of a wide range of human purposes. It involves finding effective ways of providing food, water, warmth, shelter, security, clothing, health and opportunities for interacting with others in order to improve day-to-day survival. Technology has been seen as a panacea for all human problems. It has been assumed that such problems as lack of food to feed the world's growing population, increased pollution, depletion of energy resources, and disease will eventually be solved through technological innovation. The Technology National Curriculum outlines a process which includes observation and evaluation of existing situations to identify needs and opportunities for improvement. Cooperation and sensitivity concerning the needs of others are fostered, and indeed need to be taught, because technology requires that pupils understand and design organisational systems as well as work in teams, share tasks and take leadership roles during the development of different products.
