ABSTRACT

This chapter highlights the areas within Physical Education lessons which can provide opportunities for citizenship education. It examines the potential for citizenship education within the whole area of Community/Physical Education partnerships. Physical Education is the only curriculum subject in which students are given the opportunities to develop their physical capabilities to the full. As a basic need, exercise is essential for the normal development of the skeletal, muscular and cardiovascular systems of the body. The Physical Education Non Statutory Guidance includes a section entitled 'Partnerships, Physical Education and Sport'. The Sport and Active Recreation Report emphasises the importance of developing partnerships between many agencies. How effectively citizenship education can be delivered through physical education will depend on the time allocated and the importance attached to it throughout all key stages. Too little time will deny students the ability properly to exercise their rights.
