ABSTRACT

One 'community' which is increasingly important for everyone today, especially young people, is the European Community. It is in this context, and with an awareness of the wider objective of the whole curriculum that 'Education should and must develop pupils' potential to the full and prepare them for the world in which they live', that European Awareness (EA) should be considered. EA is clearly linked to attainment targets in Geography, History and Modern Languages. However, these are not exclusive and any subject can be orientated to make a contribution. One of the conclusions of the European Awareness Project was that one 'of the most effective ways of developing European Awareness is by providing pupils with first hand experience of a foreign culture', and, similarly 'opportunities for travel, work and study abroad must be made available to the widest range of pupils, students and teachers'.
