ABSTRACT

In terms of the eight essential components identified, the sections on Community, the Family, Democracy and Work, Employment and Leisure are areas which have traditionally been the concern of A level Sociology. Economics is also well represented in the sections on Work, Employment and Leisure, as well as Public Services. Similarly, in examining the cross-curricular skills put forward in Curriculum Guidance 8, there is an obvious overlap with the skills developed by traditional Social Science courses, such as 'detecting opinion, bias and omission in evidence', or 'interpreting statistics'. The Government's intentions in re-activating the concept of citizenship have been the subject of much speculation. Motives suggested have ranged from the desire to save money to a political attack on the notion of social citizenship which has dominated since World War 2. However, Chris Brown has argued that the way citizenship is construed is to prevent the emergence of Social Science based citizenship courses.
