ABSTRACT

Why school focused inservice training (INSET)? If we continually seek to improve the quality of teaching and learning, school-based INSET is a way of achieving this upgrading. It implies time and training to implement the many necessary changes. Management training when based in school enables whole teams to learn to take equal responsibility for the healthy growth of the institution. Training is required in order that staff is able to work within a variety of cooperative groups. Training time spent on team building activities needs to focus on the processes of working together. In addition, attention to the task process, defining the job to be done, gathering information and looking at success critieria for the best outcomes are some of the skills necessary for managing changes in whole institutions. INSET which crosses school barriers and involves teachers in training with mainstream as well as other special schools is valuable in removing barriers to change.
