ABSTRACT

The terminology of the National Curriculum will be adopted in many cases. The curriculum models which have been used as a basis for curriculum development since 1971 are an important consideration, for they provide an insight into the different approaches to teaching which are being used now at the inception of the National Curriculum. The National Curriculum documentation can be seen as utilizing the idea of a checklist in terms of Attainment Targets, so, while amendment within the schools may occur, this approach can still be seen as valuable. The National Curriculum Science and English documents show a clear distinction between the Programmes of Study, which outline goals that should be incorporated into the individual schools' schemes of work, and the Attainment Targets, which state the objectives to be achieved. School staff would be able to ensure that existing school priorities were maintained if they did not fit into the National Curriculum.
