ABSTRACT

The pupils are individually described as 'the very special child'. This description applies to those who have profound and multiple learning difficulties, usually linked to sensory and physical impairment. A Science curriculum and a sensory curriculum are part of this whole curriculum. Blending the sensory and Science curricula together produces a 'sensory Science curriculum'. Through a sensory approach, the Science curriculum validates all the work undertaken in the sensory curriculum. The sensory Science curriculum should be planned and developed in coordination with all other areas of the combined school and National Curriculum. A sensory resource bank matches and enhances the sensory curriculum. The resources are in sensory areas and are clearly labelled to the relevant sensory area such as taste, smell or sound. A sensory Science bank is an integral part of the whole school sensory bank. The sensory bank should include a range of new Science trays which can be used as stimuli for experimenting and experiencing sensory Science.
