ABSTRACT

This chapter examines National Curriculum documentation and seeks to demonstrate where National Curriculum History and Geography are relevant to the needs of pupils with severe learning difficulties (SLD). The same dangers exist, as schools containing pupils with SLD begin to address National Curriculum History and Geography. Pupils with SLD are entitled to the National Curriculum. An analysis of the Attainment Targets proposed demonstrates that there are plenty of opportunities for the teaching of History to pupils with SLD. The History Working Group whose proposals have been largely accepted in this document, tried to strike a balance between competing views of the purpose of teaching History in mainstream schools. Activities in History teaching can be very exciting and highly motivating for pupils. It contains, though not expressed in this way, human and economic geography, physical geography and environmental geography. Finding a way through the Geography curriculum as set out in the Draft Order presents no difficulties.
