ABSTRACT

This introduction presents an overview of this book. The book discusses the phonetics and phonology of Korean prosody. It focuses on relating the phonetic aspect of prosody to phonology and syntax, a combination of the two approaches. The book defines the boundaries of prosodic constituents above the word level based on the intonational pattern of an utterance and shows that these prosodic constituents also serve as the domain of several phonological rules. It discusses factors affecting the prosodic phrasing; these include a syntactic constraint as well as non-syntactic factors such as focus, speech rate, weight of a phrase. The book describes the intonational structure of two dialects of Korean, the Seoul and Chonnam dialects. It discusses the interface between the prosody and the lexicon by examining the Prosodic Word defined in two ways: in terms of the intonation and the in terms of segmental phonological rules. The book also describes an experiment showing a phonetic effect at the boundaries of prosodic words.
