ABSTRACT

The Intonational Phrase is characterized by the variability of its domain and by its function of limiting the application of phonological rules. The intonational phrasing is also sensitive to rate and weight: the faster the speech rate, the fewer the number of the Intonational Phrases within an utterance, and the more syllables in a sentence or a phrase, the larger the number of the Intonational Phrases. Nasalization of obstruents around nasals is found in many languages. Obstruent Nasalization in Korean is a rule where a coda obstruent becomes nasalized before a nasal onset. A coda obstruent before an onset obstruent within a word or at the end of a word is neutralized to a lenis stop by Coda Neutralization. This chapter shows that the Intonational Phrase, in addition to being the domain of the intonational contour, is also the domain of postlexical phonological rules in Korean like Obstruent Nasalization, Spirantization and /s/-palatalization.
