ABSTRACT

This chapter discusses the movie, A Serious Man, and highlights that some reviewers have observed that the movie presented a funny and satirical portrait of the Jewish community since the main character appears as a contemporary Job, mistreated and misunderstood by his own social group, which comes out as grotesque, selfish, and unable to empathise with his suffering. The viewer’s possible interactive involvement to A Serious Man is unpredictable and can vary from negation to an intellectual and ironic sublimation or to partial alignment. The final repetition of Jefferson Airplane’s song can be interpreted as the sole positive element, capable of providing the viewer with a minimal cathartic reconciliation. An American flag is strongly shaken by the wind and the last frame of the film is an image of the tornado coming, with Danny back to camera and Jefferson Airplane’s song playing in the background, followed by the film credits.
