ABSTRACT

The first data about children with language impairment in Lithuania became available at the beginning of twentieth century. In the Siauliai institute more attention was given to the pedagogical aspect of speech and language disorders in comparison with earlier established institutes in Lithuania. The number of researchers in Lithuania interested in different kinds of language and speech problems grew over the late 1960s, 1970s and 1980s, resulting in the publication of a number of articles and recommendations for practitioners. The Law of the Ministry of Health and Protection, which relates to speech and language therapy, describes the rights, duties, competences and responsibilities of speech and language therapists, in identifying and treating various language and communication disorders. Psychologists and professionals are responsible for the assessment, diagnosis and intervention of a child’s competencies if the child with language disorder has additional areas of difficulty beyond language.
