ABSTRACT

Logopedy in the Republic of Macedonia is based on the concept of integral health and starts from the position that it represents a form of rehabilitation of persons with pathology in verbal communication, which should take place within the health care system, but as an authentic activity. The training of the professionals in Macedonia to work with children with special needs began in 1947 at the University of Belgrade in the Faculty of Defectology. Apart from the specialized public institutions for speech therapy, there are numerous outpatient clinics in public health care institutions in other cities in Macedonia in which speech and language therapies are engaged in prevention, detection and treatment of children with developmental speech and language difficulties. Speech and language therapy in Macedonia is delivered in private and public institutions. The assessment of language development and its pathology, verbal memory, auditory discrimination and stuttering is done via tests that are created by experts from the former Yugoslav Republics.
