ABSTRACT

The need for speech and language therapy (SLT) in Slovenia became apparent with the work of institutions for the deaf and hearing-impaired children. SLTs were employed at elementary schools, nurseries, health centres, educational consultations and special schools for students with intellectual disabilities throughout Slovenia. SLTs are involved in all processes of service delivery: screening, diagnosis, intervention, therapy and discharge. The SLT service in Slovenia can be a part of health, social or education services. The Health Care and Health Insurance Act is the basic law regulating the health insurance system in Slovenia. The Act provides that the treatment and rehabilitation of children, pupils and students in regular education, and children and adolescents with mental and physical impairment is fully ensured by compulsory health insurance. Children with speech and language disorders are, according to the Slovenian law, those who have disorders of adoption and understanding and speech expression that are not the result of hearing loss.
