ABSTRACT

The introduction of the new terminology was based on influences from both within Austria and from abroad. The medical approach was shaped by Emil Froschels. He focused his research on voice, speech and language difficulties and studied in Berlin under Hermann Gutzmann, who was a renowned phoniatrician. There are a limited number of therapeutic interventions evaluated for children with language impairment in German-speaking countries. Like Austria, Germany and Switzerland share the same language with minimal differences and therapy approaches developed and evaluated in Germany are applicable in all German-speaking countries. Logopadieaustria represents Austrian logopedes in all professional concerns towards the government, agencies on behalf of the profession and their patients. Health, educational and social services all contribute to the delivery of services for children with language impairments. Children with speech, language and/or communication difficulties are usually assessed multiprofessionally by medical professionals, clinical psychologists and logopedes.
