ABSTRACT

Project actors do not dispute the importance of information sharing in a project environment. In construction, the collection and dissemination of information on risks and hazards are critical to the realisation of zero harm on a project. Two-way communication between management and workers on safety issues creates a work environment characterised by trust and harmony. Workers are involved in workplace safety management, as they are always on the front line of site operations. Safety suggestions made by workers with feedback from management promotes a positive safety culture. When workers are actively involved in the workplace safety decision-making process, there are tangible benefits such as cost savings, higher productivity and reduction in site accidents and incidents. In addition, there could also be intangible benefits like higher levels of morale and trust among workers and management. This chapter examines the relevance of workers’ involvement and participation in construction safety management through a communication and suggestion scheme. A proactive safety communication and suggestion scheme is effective in promoting a positive safety culture on the construction site.
