ABSTRACT

This chapter will introduce the second part of the book: the computational analysis of women’s issues in Egypt and Saudi Arabia. I will continue my effort to overcome dichotomic discourses of gender and technology by further refining the concept of platform. I will also introduce the concept of imagined affordances and explain how women’s activities on social media platforms are enacted by – and inform in turn – the technicalities of the platforms upon which they occur. I will conclude by reflecting on the need to combine multiple methods and methodologies in order to map online discussions on and about women’s issues and briefly reflect on the idea of social media platforms as archives of data and stories that must be preserved.
