ABSTRACT

This chapter addresses the current needs in basketball for the application of a video-assisted refereeing system. It describes the instant replay (IR) system currently used in the ACB, the professional basketball league in Spain, analysing its current application and anticipating possible future improvements. The specific characteristics of basketball make it a suitable sport for referees to receive assistance from audio-visual technology, specifically clarifying controversial moments that can be objectively evaluated during the game. The extensive information acquired by Live Audiovisual, a company with a proven track record in managing and operating the replay system used by the ACB, can serve to examine the use of IRs in professional basketball.
