ABSTRACT

This chapter introduces some of the ways in which active listening and counselling skills can be used where dementia is an issue. It describes the use of validation work as a strategy designed to enhance the dignity and quality of life of the person with dementia. The awareness of individuals with dementia, their uniqueness and the potential for constructive and sensitive communication are highlighted, and as a consequence, the importance of active listening skills and counselling techniques is promoted. The importance of counselling for people with dementia lies in their awareness, insight and understanding. Validation work is in time with the new culture of dementia care. Validation therapy was created in the early 1960s by the American social worker and actress, Naomi Feil. One extremely important communication method akin to active listening and psychotherapy, as defined earlier, has been developed by Naomi Feil: validation therapy.
