ABSTRACT

In the industrial sector, information technology (IT) and operation technology (OT) are usually understood separately. Information technology and OT are two different concepts, but they can be combined. However, people must know their differences to understand their convergence. Information technology can be defined as “an entire spectrum of technologies for information processing, including software, hardware, communications technologies and related services. In general, IT does not include embedded technologies that do not generate data for enterprise use.” Greater connectivity and integration are beneficial for smart analytics and control, but more connections and networked devices mean more opportunities for security holes. While security has always been a priority for both IT and OT in traditional systems, these networked systems are presenting new scenarios and risk profiles. Information technology is characterized by the application of telecommunication equipment such as computers to process data.
