ABSTRACT

This chapter aims to proovide frugal innovation research by making it clear how the field is developing in relation to existing studies. It discusses the areas needing to be pursued by researchers interested in elaborating upon frugal innovation. Frugal innovation is a combination of creativity, innovation and business capabilities. Many frugal innovators are utilising their connection to a product or service because of lifestyle reasons. Social networks are a key part of the development process in frugal innovation. The social context is especially relevant for frugal innovation as often the reason for the cheaper cost and ease of usability is because of social factors. There are five main requirements for systems to be innovative: ability to access government, clusters and networks, critical mass, economic capacity and entrepreneurship. Frugal innovation can be a strategy for companies wanting to access consumers in developing countries.
